Launceston seminar 2009

In September 2009 APEES Marlan delivered a seminar in Launceston where we introduced the concept of using the benefits of composite materials, in the form of the AquaTerra system, to construct levee walls in lieu of earth bank levees (which requires a relatively huge land area) or concrete levees (which are significantly more expensive to construct and maintain).

Two expert international speakers delivered presentations:

Mr Dustin Troutman of Creative Pultrusions, click here for Dustin’s presentation, and
Mr Wayne Walker of Crystal Engineering Corporation, click here for Wayne’s presentation.

The seminar titled, New Solutions for New Problems – Protecting your Assets against Climate extremes addressed the issues of:
Communities and structures along the Australian coast are coming under threat from a range of climate change impacts. Extreme climate events are undermining mitigation works that 30 years ago looked impregnable. The looming public sector debt load will mean a scarcity of infrastructure finance, making previous financial cost approaches unsustainable, just when even more is needed. In short, you will have to do more with less and do so leaving a minimal carbon footprint when protecting assets. With its erosion and levee wall problems, the Tamar Valley is one area that typifies the problems on a local scale.”

Providing a new solution to these issues:
“These problems evident in the Tamar Valley in Tasmania can be addressed by the application and use of our high strength pultruded fibre-reinforced polymer composites. These composites are made using carbon and glass fibre, so not only are they strong, their profile can be traditional or customised, the material is long lasting, maintenance free and biodiversity friendly.”
