IMPROVING THE CRASH COMPATIBILITY OF CARS AND ROADSIDE POLES

The video is in slow motion of a vehicle travelling at 80 km/hr colliding with a Safe Systems Pole. The pole is able to absorb the energy of the collision, stop the vehicle and maintain the integrity of the overhead cabling during and after the collision. In the meantime the cabin of the vehicle had not been adversely affected allowing occupants the greatest possibility of walking away from such an impact with any utility pole available.

The crash testing has been undertaken at the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW (RTA) CrashLab testing facilities in Sydney, Australia, a modern world class vehicle crash testing facility that brings together all testing services and expertise.

The Safe Systems Pole utilises the Powertrusion standard Fibre Reinforced Polymer (or Composite) pole from Creative Pultrusions which has been specifically modified and fabricated to provide these results. Please refer to the engineering specification by clicking here.

Our patent pending safe systems pole and all its components have several advantages over poles constructed of traditional materials, whilst providing the basic need of the pole, include:

  • Environmentally friendlier

  • Extended life as they will not decay, rot, weather or corrode

  • Maintenance is significantly reduced, decreasing life cycle costs of the assets

  • Installation and replacement, in case of vehicle impact, is significantly easier reducing OH&S risks

  • Crash testing results prove they are much safer for road users, improved road safety for all users and reduced risk for asset owners and operators

  • The systems is non-conductive, non-metallic components reduces OH&S risks and improves overall performance of service being provided over or through the poles

  • Additional features such as fire retardant, for bush fires and top pole fires, colour and texture can be built into the components.

The Safe System Pole generally include the following components which are utilised for different applications of the system:

  • Energy Absorption

  • Top sleave

  • Cross arm

  • Base plug

  • Powertrusion pole

  • Utility furniture

  • Lifting cap

We also provide the necessary training on: installation, removal and replacement techniques.
